08:30 Meeting with the Driver in Piazzale Roma. The ride is along the A4 highway to Trieste.
10:00 HOn the last part of your transfer , you get to Trieste City Centre driving long the costline with a splendid panorama of the Adriatic sea. Trieste is the largest seaport on the Adriatic.
It was only in 1919 after fierce fighting that Trieste was united with the Kingdom of Italy.At the beginning of the 20c Trieste boasted an active literary group under the leading influence of the novelist Italo Svevo and the poet Umberto Saba. James Joyce lived in the town for some years until 1914.
You will past by the train station, and the port area. You will drive by "Piazza Unità d'Italia" - heart of the ancient city, that rise up on the Roman port, has been open over the sea by town-planning intervention on the 19th c. turn on the left to reach the St. Giusto's hill. During the way you can see the rest of a roman theatre date back the 2nd c. >From the hill splendid panorama on the city end the golf of Trieste. Visit of St. Giusto cathedral, greatest monument end simbol of the city. It's the outcome, happened on the 14 c., of 2 basilicas.
>From the hill you drive to the "Risiera di S. Sabba", sadly known to be used, during Nazi's occupation, at the beginning like post centre to the concentration camp, and after like an extermination camp.You return back to the centre for a short sightseeing.
11:30 Visit of "Castello di Miramare". Standing on the point of a headland, this castle with its lovely terraced gardens was built in 1860 for Archduke Maximilian of Austria, who was shot in Mexico in 1867, and his wife, Princess Charlotte, who died insane.
13:00 Lunch in Monfalcone
14:30 Leaving to Grado (short visit of the historical centre with the St. Eufemia Cathedral), and you get to Aquileia
15:30 Aquileia was a flourishing market under the Roman Empire and was used as general headquarters by Augustus during his conquest of the Germanic tribes.The town then became one of Italy's most important patriarchates (554-1751) ruled by bishops.You can see the 11c Basilica with splendid 4c mosaic paving.
Behind the Basilica, the Via Sacra leading to the river port, houses and the forum.
16:00 Visit and tasting extra vergin olive oil at the the "Colli del Poeta" olive-press, where a responsable will describe all the processing of the olive oil.
